2019 NSW Grandparent of the Year Award
The awards aim to recognise and celebrate the wonderful grandparents, grand friends and kin carers for the work they do in our community and to thank them for all the support they give.
The Acting Minister for Seniors announced Chris Walker as the NSW Grandparent of the Year for 2019.
Winner of the 2019 NSW Grandparent of the Year Award, Chris Walker with wife Tanya.
Chris Walker has three grandsons, two of whom were born with a rare disease. Chris has become a tireless advocate for the boys, achieving fantastic outcomes not just for his grandsons but for many children living with rare diseases in Australia.
Congratulations to Chris and to our 2019 NSW Grandparent of the Year finalists Jenny Davies and Chris Haskard.
Jenny Davies has been full-time carer for her granddaughter for a number of years. In 2017, Jenny set up the ‘Raising Kin Support Group’ for grandparents, relatives and kinship carers who have full-time care of a child relative. It is the only support group of its kind in the Blue Mountains and provides an essential service and welcoming environment for many local carers looking after loved ones.
Chris Haskard cares for her two young grandchildren, both of whom have special needs, while working as a Palliative Care Community Nurse. In between being a mum, a wife, nurse and grandmother, Chris is an active member of her local church group, volunteering as treasurer and teaching Sunday school. She is beloved member of her community who means the world to her colleagues, patients and family.
Thank you to everyone who submitted a nomination and congratulations to our finalists.
